Our Sustainable Brands Featuring Spell
Here at Meadow Collective, one of our core values is sustainability. We care about selling high-quality clothes that are good for the planet. We don’t think that the future of fashion should be cheap and plastic-based. We don’t think that making the clothes we love means killing the planet we love. No, we’re in favor of a better method.
We believe in slow fashion… Fashion where pieces are handcrafted with care by workers who are treated and paid fairly, fashion that lasts through the ages, fashion that prioritizes quality over quantity. So to promote our love of the earth and fashion, we only carry brands that support our same core value of sustainability. And that’s why we’re proud to carry one of our favorite—and judging from sales—one of your favorite brands, Spell.
Besides crafting unique pieces in whimsical, dreamy fabrics, a large part of Spell’s mission is sustainability. In fact, their mission statement is, “Our vision is to inspire, beautifully – in harmony with people and planet.” I remember when I first read that. I got goosebumps. It’s exactly the same thing we stand for here: harmony with people, the planet, and of course fashion.
The Spell brand as we know it today was created in 2016 by two sisters in Byron Bay, Australia. Wanting to create a brand that represented the grace and freedom of the feminine spirit while nurturing the planet, its makers, and its customers, these two sisters brainstormed and drew out the beginning plans of Spell.
In every step of their journey, they’ve taken care to recognize and reduce whatever impact their clothing may have on the earth and the people who make their garments.
For one, Spell is committed to using preferred fibers. These fibers are the raw material used in most Spell items. Through a comprehensive analysis of factors like land use, water, energy, carbon footprint, and toxicity measures, Spell has created its Preferred Fibers Matrix to determine which fibers have the most and the least environmental impact. By using environmentally safe fibers like certified recycled cotton, certified organic linen, canopy style standard cellulose, and hemp, Spell is able to create clothing that feels buttery soft and minimizes impact on the environment.
Spell also promotes slow fashion and a sustainable design process. It takes about one year for a Spell piece to go from the sketchbook to your hands. A year’s worth of thought and care go into your Spell piece. Now, compare that with fast fashion companies like Zara and SheIn that have much quicker turnaround times.
Keeping sustainability in mind, the word sustainability not only encompasses environmental awareness but sustainable, safe, fair working conditions for the artisans and makers who have made Spell what it is.
Spell is dedicated to using suppliers and production facilities that support its workers and the community. From their Woven Partner in the Jiangsu Province in China to their jewelry partner in Jaipur, India, Spell takes care to only work with companies who treat their workers right. This means small-scale operations that abide by Spell’s strict code of operations where all workers are 16 years or older. In these operations, whether they be organic cotton farms or textile producers, all of Spell’s partners MUST not discriminate, verbally or physically abuse their workers, exploit involuntary work, ignore occupational and safety hazards, or use child labor. Spell also mandates that they have reasonable wages and working hours. Read more about Spell’s labor standards.
By using small-scale suppliers who care about their workers, Spell is helping economically disadvantaged areas grow and support the community through beneficial and sustainable livelihoods. This means artisans can pass down their skills, and you receive a high-quality product made with expertise and love.
But if that’s not enough to love Spell, don’t hold your breath because there’s more. Spell engages in many key partnerships like Canopy, the UN Global Compact, prAna, and the Aboriginal Carbon Foundation to promote sustainability outside of its own production processes. And by engaging in the circular model of production laid out by the Global Fashion Agenda, a nonprofit organization promoting fashion sustainability, Spell reduces much of the waste traditionally associated with textile production.
And as a further testament to Spell’s value on sustainability, the brand received the 2019 Banksia Sustainability Award for small businesses. So besides, the gorgeous prints, the flattering cuts, and the high-quality materials, you can see why we’re honored to carry Spell.
