DIY: Grow Your Own Food With Disco Planters

DIY

I don’t know what it is, but I love having plants in my home. There’s just something about having a little greenery around the house that makes me feel more relaxed. The routine of caring for them is therapeutic. And, it’s comforting to know that they’re constantly growing, even if you can’t tell.

Plus, you can grow your own garden right in your kitchen. These days, it’s hard to know what “organic” really means. So, my solution to this is to indulge in my love for houseplants and grow some of my own food. By growing some of my own herbs, I can control what goes into it, I get to enjoy the beauty of having another houseplant, and more than anything, I get the satisfaction of cooking with food that I grew.

So, to celebrate my love for houseplants and food, I’ve done a little DIY project that includes edible houseplants and the coolest planters you’ve ever seen.

For this project, I went to my local Home Depot and bought some rosemary, mint, basil, and another really pretty plant that I plan on hanging on my back porch. I also got some organic potting soil to pot the plants with.

You can find the disco ball planters here. When I first saw these planters in a catalog, I immediately thought that I had to have them in my house, so, I also got them for the shop. I could see myself skating around the living room surrounded by a disco ball jungle listening to “Rhiannon.”

To start this project, you want to fill ⅘ of your disco planter with potting soil. Dig a small hole in the middle. Then, gently take your desired plant out of its original planter and put its roots in the small hole.

Next, you’re going to continue to put potting soil in the planter to surround the plant and cover its roots completely. I had to use way more soil than I thought because of the spherical shape of the planter. So, take this into account when you’re buying soil.

Now, you’re going to lightly water your plant so that the soil is damp. Repeat this process with more plants and disco planters.

That’s it! Now you have more plants to hang around your house. Make your kitchen a party and grow some fresh herbs, or just enjoy some other beautiful houseplants in a fun planter that also doubles as the best decor ever.
