How to Make Oil-Free French Fries

Fries, after burgers and hotdogs, they’re the most American food I can think of. After a long day at the pool while you’re waiting patiently for your burger—hopefully plant-based ;)— at the barbeque, you can count on the fact that someone’s making fries in the kitchen to accompany the main dish. However, even though fries are simple and easy to make, it doesn’t necessarily mean they’re healthy or even remotely nutritious.

Don’t get me wrong. I love fries. I absolutely adore them. However, if you’re trying to lose weight and stay on top of your health, they’re not the best option. Yes, potatoes are healthy, and they’re a great starch to put on your plate. But, potatoes coated and cooked in saturated vegetable oils, not so much.

How to make oil free french fries

The best oil-free french fries

The oil that fries are cooked in has very little nutritional value. I’m talking minuscule, almost none. It’s pretty much just empty calories. And what’s worse is that you can still achieve golden, delicious crispy fries without actually using oil.

So, in honor of the Fourth of July and for everyone who loves fries just as much as I do, I’ve decided to share my oil-free fry recipe with you. This recipe is great because it still gives you one of your favorite foods without the extra calories.

Directions:

The first thing you’re going to do to pressure cook your potatoes in an InstantPot for about 15 minutes. Depending on how large your potatoes are you may want to cook them longer. If you don’t have an InstantPot, then steam them until soft (until you can put a fork all the way through).

Next, slice your potatoes into quarters the long way. If your potatoes are particularly large, then you may even want to half your quarters into eighths. The thinner you cut your potatoes, the crispier your fries will be, and you may have to adjust the cooking time to less for a thinner cut. After you cut your potatoes, pre-heat your oven to 400°F.

Then, put the potatoes into a pot with a lid and mix the spices in. Note the pot with lid is ideal because you can really shake the potatoes around and get the spices evenly distributed. I usually start with 3 teaspoons of garlic powder, onion powder, rosemary, and salt, and 1 teaspoon of pepper. Then, I adjust to taste.

Your healthier alternative to french fries

After making sure each of the potato slices is coated, lay them out on a pan covered in parchment paper. The parchment paper is integral because it keeps the fries from sticking to the pan. Place in the oven for 45 minutes or until crispy, and then you have oil-free french fries that are a healthy alternative to regular fries!
