Our Sustainable Brands Featuring Rolla’s Jeans
There’s something so effortless and timeless about a good pair of jeans. You can dress them up with a pair of heels and some accessories, or you can dress them down with a graphic tee and some sneakers. They’re great for almost every occasion. I know firsthand how important a good pair of jeans can be. That’s why when I was looking for a jeans brand for the shop, I landed on Rolla’s Jeans.
With Rolla’s Jeans, there’s a lot to love. First of all, these jeans are well-made. It’s been a long time since I ran into jeans that felt this high quality, and when I tried on a pair, I knew these were it. These are the kind of jeans that last through the years. The more you wear them, the more they “mold” to you.
Secondly, I love all of the styles Rolla’s Jeans puts out. Each new season, there are always new looks that always ride the line between trendy and something that you can wear through the ages. Like right now, I’m loving the new East Coast Flair in army green cord. They’re giving a 70s-inspired Daisy Jones and the Six feel, but they’re still a lovely neutral green color that can work in any season.
Thirdly, Rolla’s Jeans are sustainably made—you had to see this one coming. Founded and designed in Australia, Rolla’s Jeans follows the footsteps of so many other Australian brands we carry in the shop like Spell, Arnhem, and Nine Lives Bazaar. It’s a brand that cares about its impact and creates a high-quality product in line with the slow fashion movement.
One of the ways Rolla’s Jeans promotes sustainable practices is through its suppliers. Before doing business with a potential supplier, Rolla’s makes its suppliers sign a code of conduct that ensures they’re following Rolla’s Jeans’s expectations and standards regarding employment practices, health and safety, and environmental compliance. To ensure that their suppliers uphold this code of conduct, Rolla’s Jeans audits its factories every one to two years using a third-party auditor.
Rolla’s Jeans is also focusing on increasing its supply chain visibility and improving its traceability. By promoting transparency in its supply chain, Rolla’s Jeans pushes back against greenwashing. Oftentimes, brands will claim that they have sustainable practices, but really they’re no better than large-scale fast fashion brands. Rolla’s Jeans can actually walk the talk. The company has mapped a large portion of its fabric mills and has traced back to the cotton that its denim comes from.
Speaking of cotton, Rolla’s Jeans is careful to use responsibly sourced cotton. Almost ⅔ of the environmental impact in the garment and textile industry happens at the raw material stage, so by using sustainably-grown cotton, Rolla’s Jeans is already making a huge positive impact. Rolla’s Jeans primarily uses Australian-grown cotton and certified organic cotton. By using cotton grown close to home, Rolla’s Jeans can keep a closer watch on its sources to ensure they’re complying with Rolla’s Jeans’s environmental standards. Plus, they help support the local economy. Now Rolla’s Jeans does still import cotton from Turkey, India, Brazil, and the United States, but the company takes care to ensure it’s coming from organic sources.
In manufacturing, Rolla’s Jeans can also boast that water used in its production is reused and recycled with zero waste discharged as contaminated sewage. All of its water is treated and about 30% of it is recycled for immediate re-use in production. The remaining 70% is transported to an external facility, filtered, and cleaned before being released back into the public water grid. In the next year, Rolla’s Jeans hopes to increase its 30% of recycled water to 50%.
In every animal product it uses, Rolla’s Jeans makes sure that its suppliers follow the five freedoms framework. This is the philosophy that the ethical care of animals includes freedom from hunger and thirst, freedom from discomfort, freedom from injury or disease, freedom to express normal behavior, and freedom from fear and distress.
Outside of its supply chain and production, Rolla’s Jeans also tries to limit its environmental impact in its offices. And finally, the company takes care to support its local and international communities by donating to charities and supporting slow fashion-based projects and education.
So all of this is to say, when you buy a pair of Rolla’s Jeans, you’re doing more than just purchasing a great pair of jeans. You’re making a choice. You’re voting with your dollars and supporting the slow fashion movement.
