The Mermaidcore Aesthetic
I know it’s not technically summer, but it’s hot enough in Miami that I feel like we can call it summer by now. And one of my favorite things about summer is all the blockbuster movies coming out. I mean, the new Indiana Jones movie, Barbie, and the Little Mermaid, could you get any better? So in order to get in the summer mood and show you all of the latest pieces we have, we decided to pull together a “Little Mermaid” inspired outfit!
With the rising trend of mermaidcore on TikTok and Instagram, the opening of “The Little Mermaid” couldn’t have come at a better time. I was super excited to style this look because I love the mermaidcore vibe. It’s casual and beachy. However, that’s not to say mermaidcore isn’t pulled together. Mermaidcore, while casual, is still effortlessly chic. And as a trend, it calls for outfits that transition from day to night well.
We shot these photos at the new Leandro Erlich: Liminal exhibit at the Perez Art Museum. This was the perfect location for our mermaidcore-inspired outfit because one part of the exhibit is a swimming pool-themed installation where you can go and take pictures.
The main base of this outfit is this lovely teal Indah dress. This might be one of my favorite summer pieces we’ve gotten in so far. Everything from the color to the relaxed shape of the dress just screams mermaidcore. It’s the perfect dress to wear walking down the beach during the day and to a nice dinner at night with some heels.
Since a large part of mermaidcore revolves around a beachy aesthetic, we HAD to add some beach-inspired jewelry. For Lindsey's headpiece, we repurposed this puka shell necklace to meramid-esque crown. I also added the Eryn Pink Heishi Turquoise and Pearl Necklace which is made in Miami. I love this necklace not only because it perfectly fits the mermaidcore aesthetic, but it’s great for layering and stacking. To finish up the look, I also added these Navone Light Compass Earrings. Their combination of white and gold fits instead of the beachy color scheme and complements the teal of the Indah dress.
Since I only pulled together one look, I thought I’d share some of my favorite mermaidcore items from the shop. First of all, I’m obsessed with these Sansa platform sandals. They’re made out of upcycled cotton rope, and they’re a great sandal for summer. You can pair them with our mermaidcore outfit or a breezy pair of shorts and a tunic.
My next favorite mermaidcore-inspired item is our Alia Swim Bikini because you can’t have mermaidcore without a good bikini. Made in Miami, this is a great bikini for the summer. It’s one-size-fits-all, and before you say anything, I know what you’re thinking—one-size-fits-all bikini, yeah in your dreams—but before you pass any more judgment, try it on. The type of fabric it’s made out of stretches easily and fits comfortably on a majority of silhouettes. Another thing I love about it is that it’s customizable. Depending on your preference, you can either wear it high-waisted or low-waisted.
You know I couldn’t complete this list without including a good hat, and this Seashells boater hat is perfect for a mermaidcore aesthetic. It’s made of straw and has the cutest decorative seashell strap. It’s the perfect accessory to add to an outfit when you want to add a subtle beachy element but want to be too obvious.
