Our Sustainable Brands Featuring Hammies

If you’ve scrolled through my Instagram or met me in person, you know a few things about me. One, I believe in sustainable and slow fashion. I try to only sell high-quality, sustainable items that are good for the earth and that support garment workers’ rights. Two, I deeply love fashion and bohemian style. From whimsical to retro, I curate items that cater to the free-spirited, eco-conscious gal. And three, I absolutely love to rollerskate. Besides running my shop, it’s one of my passions in life.

So, when I find a brand that can tie all of these beliefs and passions together, you know I’m going to do everything I can to carry it. And that is why I carry Hammies.

Hammies in Miami

Love these purple Hammies

You may have already seen a pair of Hammies shorts while scrolling through the depths of Instagram or Tiktok due to their popularity with rollerskaters. But if you haven’t, then allow me to explain why they’re one of my favorite brands.

Born in Southern California, Hammies shorts exemplify the laidback Californian beach culture of the 70s and 80s. They pay homage to the original generation of shorts that were popularized by surf and skate culture during that time. But more than anything they’re for the doers, the people who want a pair of shorts that are fashionable but still functional.

And aside from the throwback retro style and the fact they’re so comfortable to skate in, I love Hammies for some of their commitments to sustainability and creating a quality product that lasts through the years.

Even though Hammies did recently move its production from California to China to keep up with demand, the factory that it chose for its shorts is eco-conscious and responsible. It has the following certifications for production, sustainability, and fair working conditions: 9001 for product quality standards, ISO 14001 for environmental standards, SA 8000 for social responsibility standards, and OHSAS 18001 for health and safety standards.

Hammies shorts are also 98% cotton with 2% elastic. The high percentage of natural fibers in their shorts creates less of an environmental impact and is likely to be better for your skin. After all, cotton is a hypoallergenic fiber. To read more about the benefits of cotton versus synthetic fibers, check out our blog, “Why Cotton is Better than Polyester”.

These green Hammies are to die for!

In addition, Hammies also uses recycled packaging for their shipping and purchases carbon credits—a permit that represents 1 ton of carbon dioxide removed from the atmosphere— to offset its carbon footprint from production and distribution. And moreover, Hammies’s ultimate goal is for its products and packaging to be 100% biodegradable.

So basically, all of this means that Hammies is participating in the slow fashion movement and demonstrating a commitment to more responsible production. This is important because when we as consumers support sustainable brands, we’re casting a vote with every purchase. Each purchase of a “slow fashion-minded” brand, is a vote for sustainability and fair working conditions for garment workers everywhere.

So when you’re purchasing Hammies you’re not only buying a pair of super cute, retro-style shorts, you’re supporting the slow fashion movement one piece of clothing at a time.
