Spell’s Impact Report 2023

You guys know how much I love Spell. Their values align perfectly with everything the shop stands for: slow fashion, garments made with high-quality materials by fairly-treated workers, and a commitment toward sustainability. It’s all these things that can make fashion a part of our lives and world without destroying it. So, when I get Spell’s yearly impact report, you know I have to share it.

One of the first things about sustainability that a lot of people don’t talk about is the people aspect. In order for a brand to be truly eco-friendly and good for the Earth, it has to be good for its workers. And garment workers are some of the most marginalized industrial workers. Fast fashion often abuses garment workers, making them work for long hours in unsafe conditions—that’s why brands like Shein are so cheap.

Spell takes action to make sure its supply chain is 100% transparent. All of the factories they work with must follow fair trade conditions like working-age restrictions, safe and fair working conditions, appropriate working hours, and diversity, equity, and inclusion measures. As a women-owned and operated business, Spell also supports other women-owned and operated businesses. This one hits close to home for us because we know how important it is that women have a say in the economy and production of goods. There are even studies saying that female participation in the business world leads to more sustainable initiatives and improves the local community.

Another way Spell invests in sustainability through people is through its support of local artisans across the world. Investing in artisans preserves a culture of craftsmanship and allows families to maintain trades and skills that have been passed down from generation to generation.

Aside from supporting people, Spell is also committed to sustainability through the materials it uses and its means of production. By 2025, Spell has set out the goal to only use preferred fibers. Preferred fibers are textiles and materials that are sustainably sourced and have minimal impact on the environment. They are easily biodegradable and are natural materials like 100% organic cotton, hemp, CanopyStyle cellulose, responsibly sourced animal fleece, and organic wool. Currently, 86.9% of all Spell items are made out of preferred fibers, but they have the plan to increase their preferred fiber use to 100%.

Spell hopes to end the linear garment life cycle and work toward a more circular model focused on fiber recycling and reuse. Instead of garments ending up in the landfill and contributing to increasing plastic pollution, Spell wants to focus on repairing and renting out repaired garments.

Furthermore, Spell offsets 100% of its carbon footprint by purchasing carbon credits that go to the protection of rainforests in Peru.

Another value we share with Spell is their commitment to giving back to the community. Just in the last year, Spell donated more than a quarter of a million dollars to the Climate Council and the Bunjum Aboriginal Corporation.

It’s clear that we love Spell, but like I’ve mentioned it’s about more than just its beautiful collections. When I find a brand that truly represents what Meadow Collective stands for, I have to carry it. Because, every time you buy something, you’re voting with your dollars. You’re making the choice to either support or destroy fast fashion, and I’m proud to carry slow fashion alternatives and spread awareness that fashion and protecting the planet can go hand in hand.
